TRAVEL FAR 227
Free, Affordable and Genuinely Good Options for the Entire Family What made a big difference for us was how many affordable or even free options there are. Local parks are everywhere and really well-kept, so you can easily spend a morning or afternoon without spending anything. A lot of museums are free or have very minimal entry fees, which is such a bonus with children. And of course, all the best parts of Scotland are the beaches, the lochs, the hills, and the walks, which of course cost nothing at all. We also loved stopping in smaller towns. We’d pull in somewhere that wasn’t even on the plan, walk along a busy little high street, find somewhere for lunch and then discover a beach, a walk or a viewpoint nearby. Those moments felt much more relaxed and far less rushed than trying to move from one attraction to the next. The weather is exactly what everyone says it is: unpredictable. We had sunshine, rain, and wind all in one day more than once. But it didn’t really matter. You just dress for it and carry on. It becomes part of the experience rather than something that ruins your plans. Pack layers, a waterproof and a good attitude. The weather is part of the charm.
