226 TRAVEL FAR

Y ou don’t have to plan anything complicated. One day we were by a loch, canoeing; another, walking through the hills; another, just in a park with space for the kids to run. It’s the kind of place where you naturally slow down a bit because everything around you encourages it. We did some of the well-known attractions, and they are worth it. Castles, the zoo, those bigger “day out” experiences, and they’re all there and really well done. For older children, there are also things that feel a bit different and more exciting, like the Edinburgh Dungeons or festivals. But if I’m honest, the days we remember most weren’t the big-ticket ones. If there are any Summer Highland Games, like a county fair, definitely worth attending!

Don’t miss the Highland Games if they fall during your visit. Think county fair meets Scottish tradition. A brilliant family day out and completely unlike anything else.
