EXCELLENCE IN HIGHER EDUCATION 149

T he School of Textiles and Design at Heriot- Watt University is launching an exciting new Summer Bootcamp designed to introduce young creative minds to the world of design through a structured, practical, and highly engaging learning experience. More than simply a workshop or short camp, the initiative has been developed as a bridge into formal design education, helping participants better understand their own creative interests, strengths, and future opportunities within the growing creative industries. The bootcamp has been designed for students who may already have creative hobbies or interests but have never formally explored them within a design-led environment. Many young people are already creating every day.  T hey sketch ideas.

Creative interests are not just hobbies. They can be the starting point for future pathways in design, innovation and entrepreneurship. A Practical Introduction To Design Throughout the programme, participants will be introduced to a range of design disciplines and creative methods through hands-on activities, collaborative tasks, and guided exploration. The bootcamp encourages students to think critically, communicate visually, and develop confidence in expressing ideas. Rather than focusing purely on artistic ability, the programme demonstrates how design combines creativity with structured thinking, problem-solving, communication, and experimentation. One of the key goals of the bootcamp is to provide participants with a clearer understanding of how designers work in practice.
