back to School Guide 147

Don’t leave the snack shopping for the last minute on Sunday night, and make sure to get to the uniform shop before the final weekend, we all know it will be chaos! It’s also worth checking if there are any roadworks or new traffic restrictions in your area, as the first day back always sees heavier traffic than expected. Nobody needs a stressful car journey for the first day back. As the first week unfolds, try to stay positive without piling on pressure. Praise the little wins, whether it’s getting out the door on time, or simply walking through the school gates with a smile. Every child adjusts at their own pace. Some may bounce back into routine quickly, while others take a little longer to settle. Be patient, keep communication open, and celebrate progress rather than perfection.

If possible, reconnect with the school community before the first day. Organising a playdate with classmates, attending the school's open day, or even just walking past the school can help children feel grounded. Remind them of familiar things, for the younger children the playground they love, the friends they’ll see, or a favourite subject and try to reframe school as something positive and exciting. For older children, go over their options, after school activities or new roles and responsibilities. Let your child be involved in the back- to-school preparation. Packing their school bag together, choosing their stationery, and checking off their supply list can give them a sense of control and excitement. A little independence goes a long way in boosting their confidence.

A Fresh Start for a New Year The start of a new school year is a special time, full of hope, energy, and possibility. With the right support, our children can face it not just with readiness, but with enthusiasm and a sense of pride, just the smallest of things can make the biggest impact for that successful first week back!
