Simple Steps to Reset Routines at Home From my experience as a school principal and as founder of Edsidera, I’ve seen just how impactful a few simple steps at home can be in easing this transition.
One of the most effective things families can do is begin resetting routines early. Don’t wait until the night before school starts to begin adjusting bedtime, gradually bringing it forward by 15 minutes each day in the week before school can help children wake up feeling rested and less resistant. Mealtimes, screen-time boundaries, and even simple evening rituals like reading before bed can all help establish a rhythm that makes the return to school feel more manageable. Start talking about school in a calm, open way, and allow your child to express any feelings they may have. It’s natural for them to feel a mix of excitement and nervousness. Normalising these feelings, especially if they’re worried about things like making new friends or having a new teacher, can go a long way. For younger children, reading books about starting school or role-playing morning routines can ease anxiety. For older ones, honest conversations about what they’re looking forward to and what they’re uncertain about can help build resilience.
