Play is not a break from learning. It is how young children learn best. The Power of Conversation at Home Communication and language are especially important in the early years, and this is closely shaped by the quality of interaction between parent and child. Children benefit from regular opportunities to talk, listen, and express themselves through activities such as storytelling, role play, and everyday conversations, which help develop vocabulary, understanding, and reading skills.
Taking time to ask open questions, extend children’s play, and encourage them to explain their ideas can significantly deepen learning. Keeping the Reading Habit Alive Reading too unquestionably remains one of the most powerful habits to maintain over the summer. Sharing stories, encouraging independent reading, and even following simple instructions in everyday tasks all build comprehension and support learning across the curriculum. Finding the Right Balance Children do not need every moment planned. A balanced approach, with clear limits on screen time and space for both structured and unstructured activities, helps develop independence and curiosity. The summer holidays are not a pause in learning, but a different phase of it and children who spend time playing, reading, and talking often return to school more confident, more articulate, and ready to learn.
