Excellence in Schools 49

B uilding on its recognition as the World's Best School for Environmental Action, Arbor is focused on shaping the next generation of changemakers through an expanded secondary curriculum, innovative community partnerships and emphasis on student experience. From Recognition to Responsibility For Principal Gemma Thornley, global recognition comes with a sense of purpose. “Awards are affirming, but our real responsibility is to keep evolving,” she explains. “We want to show that sustainability is a mindset - not just about the environment, but about how young people think, lead and make decisions about the future.” This drives Arbor’s development plans this year - from its growing Sixth Form and new sports pitch to support wellbeing and competitive sport, to piloting a marine conservation campaign with UK charity, Ocean Generation, and experiential learning opportunities that stretch beyond the classroom.

Learning That Leads Somewhere At the heart of Arbor’s approach is a Secondary and Sixth Form programme that blends academic rigour with purpose- driven learning. Following the British National Curriculum, students select GCSE, A Level and BTEC pathways designed to develop curiosity, independence and global awareness. To support them, the school’s Futures Counselling Programme provides personalised career and university guidance, with visiting admissions teams from the universities of Cambridge, Edinburgh, St Andrews and other global institutions helping students understand what’s possible after Arbor. “Futures counselling isn’t just about university placement,” says Thornley. “It’s about helping each student discover what drives them - whether that’s STEM, sustainability, sport or the arts - and ensuring they have the confidence and direction to pursue it.”

Real growth happens when students connect with the world around them
